During the Warring States period, there was a prince in the state of Wei named Wuji.
He was the younger brother of King Anli of Wei and was known for his kindness and courtesy.
As a result, many wise men came to him, and he had three thousand guests under his roof.
One year, the state of Zhao was attacked by King Zhuangxiang of Qin. The wife of Prince Pingyuan of Zhao, who was also Wuji's sister, wrote several letters to King Wei and Wuji asking for help.
King Wei sent General Jinbi to lead an army to rescue Zhao, but King Zhuangxiang of Qin warned King Wei that anyone who dared to rescue Zhao would be attacked first.
King Wei was afraid and ordered Jinbi to stop advancing and only observe the situation at Ye City.
The messenger of Prince Pingyuan repeatedly asked Wuji for help and reproached him, saying, "Handan is about to fall, do you not care about our Zhao or your sister?"
Wuji was very worried and repeatedly asked King Wei to send troops, but King Wei was afraid of Qin and refused to listen.
At this time, there was a hermit in Wei named Houying, who was a gatekeeper and was respected by Wuji.
He knew that Wuji was determined to save Zhao, so he gave him an idea.
Wuji followed Houying's plan, stole King Wei's military seal, falsely issued orders, seized Jinbi's military power, and killed him.
Then, Wuji selected 80,000 elite soldiers, defeated the Qin army, rescued Handan, and saved Zhao.
King Zhao and Prince Pingyuan personally went to the border to welcome Wuji.
However, King Wei was angry with Wuji for stealing the military seal and killing Jinbi, and Wuji was aware of this.
So, he let his general take the army back to Wei, while he stayed in Zhao.
King Zhao wanted to give Wuji five cities as thanks, but someone advised Wuji, saying, "There are things you cannot forget and things you should forget. You should remember when others have done you favors, and hope that you can forget when you have done favors for others. Although you saved Zhao, you were not a loyal subject to Wei. Your proud appearance is not good now."
Wuji felt ashamed after hearing this, feeling ashamed to the core.
In the end, he humbly declined King Zhao's kindness.
This is the origin of the idiom 'ashamed to the core', which means extremely ashamed.
