Sima Qian, a famous historian, told the story of two virtuous men, Ji and Zheng, in his book 'Records of the Grand Historian'.
During the early Han Dynasty, they were both high officials and respected and feared by people.
Many people came to visit them every day and tried to please them.
However, because of their upright character and dislike for doing bad things, they were not popular in the official circle.
Later, they both lost their official positions and power, and life became very difficult for them.
At this time, those who used to visit them frequently disappeared.
The same thing happened to another man named Zhai Gong.
He was a minister during the reign of Emperor Wen of Han and had once been a judge with a high status.
When he was an official, many guests visited him every day, and his house was bustling like it was about to explode.
But when he lost his official position, no one came to visit him anymore.
His door was deserted, not even a bird could be seen.
Later, Zhai Gong regained his official position, and the guests started to visit him again.
After experiencing all this, Zhai Gong understood human nature and realized that the world can be cruel sometimes.
He wrote a sentence on his front door: 'One death and one life reveal true friendship; one poverty and one wealth reveal true manners; one honor and one disgrace reveal true friendship.'
This sentence means that only in the face of great events such as life and death, poverty and wealth can true friendship be revealed.
Through this story, Sima Qian expressed his feelings about the coldness of human relations in the official circle and also reflected his own mood.
This story was later condensed into the idiom 'deserted door', which is used to describe the situation where there are few visitors after losing power as an official.
It can also be used to describe the appearance of a general store or house with no one at the door.
