During the Warring States period, there was a great general in Chu named Zhao Xiuxiu. His fame spread far and wide.
One day, King Xuan of Chu asked the officials in his court, "I have heard that the princes in the north are afraid of Zhao Xiuxiu. Is this true?"
But no one answered him.
Only Jiang Yidachen stepped forward and said, "Let me tell you a story."
Once upon a time, there was a tiger that often hunted animals to eat.
One day, it caught a fox.
The fox said to the tiger, "You cannot eat me. The God of Heaven sent me to be the king of all animals. If you eat me, you will be disobeying the command of the God of Heaven. If you don't believe me, I can walk in front of you, and you follow behind me. See if the other animals run away when they see me."
The tiger believed the fox and followed it.
All the animals saw them and fled in fear.
The tiger did not know that the animals were running away because they were afraid of it, but thought they were afraid of the fox.
Now, Your Majesty's territory is 5,000 miles wide and your army numbers in the millions, yet General Zhao Xiuxiu holds the power of the military.
So, the princes in the north are not afraid of Zhao Xiuxiu, but of your army, just as the animals were afraid of the tiger.
This story is recorded in the 'Strategies of the Warring States' and the idiom 'The fox borrows the tiger's ferocity' also comes from this story.
The idiom means to bully or domineer by relying on the power of an authority figure.
