During the Warring States period, the state of Zhao wanted to attack the state of Yan.
Su Dai was a man from the state of Yan, and he decided to persuade King Hui of Zhao not to send troops.
One day, Su Dai came to the state of Zhao, and on the banks of the Yi River, he saw a mussel basking in the sun.
Suddenly, a snipe flew over, wanting to peck at the mussel's flesh.
The mussel immediately closed its shell, pinching the snipe's long beak.
The snipe said to the mussel, "If it doesn't rain today or tomorrow, you will be dried up by the sun."
The mussel also said to the snipe, "If I don't let you go today or tomorrow, you will become a dead snipe."
Neither of them would give in, and they kept arguing.
At this time, a fisherman walked over, saw this situation, and caught them both.
Su Dai told this story to King Hui of Zhao and said, "If the states of Yan and Zhao keep arguing like this, then the state of Qin will be like that fisherman, who can easily gain benefits without any effort. So, I hope Your Majesty can carefully consider the matter of sending troops."
King Hui of Zhao listened to Su Dai's words and thought they made sense, so he decided not to send troops to attack the state of Yan.
Later, people called this story 'The Snipe and the Mussel', using it to比喻 two people who argue endlessly over something, only to let someone else reap the benefits.
