在冀州的南部，有一个老翁叫做愚公。
他住在黄河的北岸，那里有两座大山——太行和王屋。
这两座山又高又大，挡住了去路，让人们不得不绕很远的路才能过去。
有一天，愚公把全家人都叫到了一起。
他说：“我想我们一起努力，把这两座山铲平，让路一直通到豫州南部、汉水南岸。你们觉得怎么样？”
大家都同意了，但是愚公的妻子有点担心。
她问：“你年纪这么大了，连小山都搬不动，怎么搬得动这么大的山呢？而且，我们把这些石头和土放到哪里去呢？”
大家想了想，决定把它们堆到渤海边上，也就是隐土的北面。
于是，愚公带着三个能干的子孙，开始凿石头、挖泥土。
他们用畚箕把土石运到渤海边上。
邻居京城氏的寡妇有个七八岁的小孩，也跑来帮忙。
他们通常一个冬天或夏天才能回家一次。
河曲智叟看到愚公他们这么辛苦，就嘲笑他们说：“你们太傻了！你们年纪这么大，力气这么小，怎么可能搬得动这么多石头和土呢？”
愚公叹了口气，回答说：“你的想法太顽固了。我死了还有儿子，儿子又有孙子，孙子又有儿子……子子孙孙是没有穷尽的，但这两座山是不会长高的。有什么好怕的呢？”
河曲智叟听了，一句话也说不出来。
山神听说了这件事，他担心愚公会一直挖下去，就把这件事告诉了天帝。
天帝被愚公的毅力所感动，命令大力神夸娥氏的儿子各背一座山，一座放到朔方的东边，一座放到雍州的南部。
从此以后，冀州的南部和汉水的南岸再也没有高山阻挡了。
现在，人们常常会用“愚公移山”这个故事来鼓励别人要有勇气面对困难，要有恒心和毅力。
In the southern part of Jizhou, there lived an old man named the Foolish Old Man.
He resided on the northern bank of the Yellow River, where two large mountains stood tall - Taihang and Wangwu.
These mountains were so high and vast that they blocked the path, forcing people to take a long detour to get past them.
One day, the Foolish Old Man called his entire family together.
He said, "I think we should work together and level these two mountains, making a path that goes straight to the southern part of Yuzhou and the southern bank of the Han River. What do you all think?"
Everyone agreed, but the Foolish Old Man's wife was a bit worried.
She asked, "You are so old, and you can't even move a small hill. How can you move such big mountains? Also, where will we put all the rocks and soil?"
After some thought, they decided to pile them up by the Bohai Sea, on the northern side of the Hidden Land.
So, the Foolish Old Man, along with three strong grandchildren, started chiseling rocks and digging soil.
They used baskets to carry the dirt and stones to the Bohai Sea.
A young boy from their neighbor Mrs. Jingcheng also came to help. He was only seven or eight years old.
They usually went home only once every winter or summer.
Mr. Zhishou from the River Bend saw how hard the Foolish Old Man and his family were working and mocked them, saying, "You are too foolish! You are so old and weak, how can you possibly move so many rocks and soil?"
The Foolish Old Man sighed and replied, "Your thinking is too stubborn. Even if I die, I have sons, and my sons will have grandsons, and their sons will have great-grandsons... Our family line will go on forever, but these mountains will not grow taller. What is there to be afraid of?"
Mr. Zhishou had no words in response.
The mountain god heard about this and grew worried that the Foolish Old Man would keep digging. So, he told the Heavenly Emperor about it.
The Heavenly Emperor was moved by the Foolish Old Man's perseverance and ordered the sons of the God of Strength, Kuafu, to each carry a mountain. One was placed to the east of Shuo Fang, and the other to the south of Yongzhou.
From then on, there were no more high mountains blocking the way between the southern part of Jizhou and the southern bank of the Han River.
Nowadays, people often use the story of 'The Foolish Old Man Removes the Mountains' to encourage others to face difficulties with courage and to have perseverance.
