Han Feizi of the Warring States period was a very wise man.
He told people that governing a country should be timely and should not always follow the ways of the ancients. It should suit the needs of modern society, otherwise it would be a waste of effort.
Han Feizi told a story to tell everyone this truth.
Once upon a time, in the state of Song, there was a farmer whose field had a tree in the middle.
One day, a rabbit came running. It was flustered and did not see clearly ahead, so it crashed into the tree and killed itself.
The farmer was happy and got the rabbit. He had a delicious meal.
With this unexpected gain, the farmer no longer worked as hard as before.
He no longer tilled his land or weeded. He threw away his tools and sat under the big tree every day, waiting for rabbits to come knocking on their own.
What happened?
He never got another rabbit again, and his field became barren because it had not been cultivated for a long time.
This incident became a laughing stock throughout the country.
Later, people extended this story to the idiom 'waiting for rabbits by the tree stump.'
This idiom is used to satirize those who are inflexible and do not know how to adapt, or those who want to get something for nothing and just wait for their goals to come to them on their own.
It can also be called 'watching for rabbits by the tree stump.'
