During the Warring States period, there was a strategist named Su Li.
He heard that Bai Qi, a great general of the Qin state, was about to lead his troops to attack the capital city of Wei state, so he went to see the King of Zhou.
"Bai Qi has already defeated the states of Han, Zhao, and Wei, and even killed Wu, a general of the Wei state, and occupied a lot of land. Now he is going to attack Daliang again. If Daliang falls, then our Zhou royal family will be in danger. So, Your Majesty should think of a way to stop him.".
So, Su Li gave the King of Zhou an idea.
He suggested that the King of Zhou send someone to the Qin state to persuade Bai Qi not to go to war.
After this person arrived in the Qin state, he told a story.
This story was about a man from Chu who was very good at archery. His name was Yang Youji.
Once, Yang Youji shot arrows at a willow tree from a hundred steps away. He shot one hundred arrows in a row, each hitting a willow leaf.
Everyone thought his archery skills were excellent.
But a passerby said: "You do shoot well, but I can teach you a better way to shoot arrows."
Yang Youji was very unconvinced when he heard this. He said: "Everyone says I'm good at shooting arrows, how can you teach me? If you can teach me, why don't you shoot the willow leaves for me instead?"
The man replied: "I can't teach you archery skills, but I saw you shoot one hundred arrows today, each hitting a willow leaf. But you didn't rest. Later, you may feel tired, and then you might not hit anything. This is called 'all previous efforts wasted.'".
Now, you have defeated many states and gained a lot of land. Your achievements are significant.
But if you lose this battle, all your hard work will be in vain.
So, it's best if you pretend to be sick and don't go to war.
Later, people turned the phrase 'hundred hits, hundred bulls' eyes' in this story into an idiom, describing either superb archery skills with no misses, or extremely accurate predictions, calculations, or medication.
