很久以前，在春秋时代，有一位晋献公，他非常喜欢骊姬。
骊姬为了让自己的儿子奚齐当上太子，她用了一些计谋害死了原本被立为太子的申生，并且煽动晋献公派兵去捉另外两个儿子重耳和夷吾。
重耳和夷吾为了逃命，分别去了不同的国家。
后来，晋献公去世了，奚齐也被臣子们杀死了。
夷吾回到了晋国，继承了王位，被称为晋惠公。
但是，晋惠公非常害怕重耳会回来夺走他的王位，于是派人去刺杀重耳。
重耳在狄国住了十二年，然后又去了卫国、齐国、曹国、宋国等国家。
但是，大部分国家的国君对他都不太友好。
最后，他来到了楚国。
楚庄王用接待诸侯的礼节设宴款待重耳，并问他：“如果你回到晋国，你会怎么报答我呢？”
重耳回答说：“你已经有了美女和财宝，而且你的国家有很多珍贵的东西。那些流散到晋国的，都是你多余的，我真的不知道怎么来报答你。”
楚庄王说：“即使这样，还是可以说说报答我的方式。”
重耳回答说：“如果托你的福气，我能回到晋国，一旦晋、楚发生战争，两国军队在中原相遇，我会让晋军向后撤退九十里。如果不能获得你退兵的命令，我也只能拿起弓箭和你应战了。”
重耳在外面流浪了十九年后，终于回到了晋国，成为晋文公。
后来，晋国为了帮助宋国，和楚国打了起来。
当两军对峙时，重耳为了报答楚庄王并实现自己的诺言，下令全军往后撤退九十里，一直退到城濮才停止。
从此以后，人们就把“辟君三舍”引申为“退避三舍”这句成语，用来比喻对人容忍让步，不和人相争。
Long ago, in the Spring and Autumn period, there was a man named Jin Xian Gong who loved Lady Li very much.
Lady Li wanted her son Xi Qi to become the crown prince, so she used some tricks to kill the original crown prince Shen Sheng and incited Jin Xian Gong to send troops to catch two other sons, Chong E and Yi Wu.
Chong E and Yi Wu fled for their lives to different countries.
Later, Jin Xian Gong passed away, and Xi Qi was also killed by his ministers.
Yi Wu returned to Jin and inherited the throne, known as King Hui of Jin.
However, King Hui of Jin was very afraid that Chong E would come back to take his throne, so he sent someone to assassinate Chong E.
Chong E lived in Di for twelve years and then went to Wei, Qi, Cao, Song, and other countries.
But most of the kings of these countries were not friendly to him.
Finally, he arrived at Chu.
King Zhuang of Chu held a banquet to entertain Chong E with the etiquette of receiving vassals and asked him, "If you return to Jin, how will you repay me?"
Chong E replied, "You already have beautiful women and treasures, and your country has many precious things. Those scattered in Jin are just your surplus, I really don't know how to repay you."
King Zhuang of Chu said, "Even so, you can still say how you will repay me."
Chong E replied, "If it is because of your blessing that I return to Jin, once Jin and Chu go to war and our armies meet in the Central Plains, I will order the Jin army to retreat 90 leagues. If I cannot get your order to retreat, I can only fight you with my bow and arrow."
Chong E wandered outside for nineteen years before finally returning to Jin and becoming King Wen of Jin.
Later, Jin went to war with Chu to help Song.
When the two armies faced each other, King Wen of Jin ordered the entire army to retreat 90 leagues in order to repay King Zhuang of Chu and fulfill his promise. They retreated all the way to Cheng Pu before stopping.
From then on, people extended the phrase 'retreat from the king three leagues' into the idiom 'retreat three leagues', which is used to比喻 being tolerant and giving way to others, not competing with them.
