Yu Qian, also known as Tingyi, was a man from Qiantang in Zhejiang.
In the first year of Xuan De, he became a censorial supervisor.
He was tall and straight, with a loud voice.
Whenever he presented his opinions to the emperor, the emperor would listen attentively.
However, Yu Qian was very knowledgeable, not greedy at heart, and always brave when facing things, rarely hesitating.
This made some people jealous and hateful towards him.
After serving as an official for nine years, he was promoted to Left Vice Minister.
Previously, officials from Henan usually brought gifts such as silk handkerchiefs and mushrooms when they went to the capital to see the emperor or handle affairs.
But when Yu Qian served as governor of Henan, every time he returned to the capital to discuss matters, he would bring nothing valuable.
He even wrote a poem saying, "Because officials force levies and search, these local specialties such as handkerchiefs, mushrooms, and incense cannot be enjoyed by the people, but instead bring disaster to them. When I return to the capital, I bring nothing but clear winds in both sleeves to see the Son of Heaven, so that the common people will not criticize me."
This is how he restrained himself.
The idiom 'Two Empty Sleeves' comes from here.
It is used to describe an official who is extremely honest and incorruptible.
It can also be used to describe someone who is carefree and unconventional.
