During the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, there was a scholar named Lu Sheng.
He was very poor. One day, while passing through Handan on the road, he met a Taoist priest with the surname Lü at an inn.
They chatted happily.
After a while, Lu Sheng felt a little tired and wanted to rest.
At this time, the innkeeper was cooking yellow millet porridge.
The Taoist took a pillow and gave it to Lu Sheng, saying, "If you sleep with this pillow, your wishes will come true and you will gain wealth and honor."
After Lu Sheng fell asleep, he had a dream.
In his dream, he married the daughter of a wealthy family, passed the imperial examination, became a military governor, and eventually served as prime minister for ten years.
He had many lands, houses, beauties, and horses, enjoying endless wealth and honor until he died old.
Suddenly, Lu Sheng woke up because of a stretch.
He found himself still in the inn, and the Taoist was also beside him, and the innkeeper's yellow millet porridge hadn't even been cooked yet!
He was surprised because what he dreamed of seemed to have really happened.
He said to the Taoist, "Could all that wealth and honor just be a dream?"
The Taoist replied, "Now you should know that what people pursue in their lives is nothing more than a dream!"
Later, people called this story 'A Dream of Yellow Millet', using it to比喻 wealth and honor are like dreams and illusions, ultimately fleeting.
