During the Warring States period, many countries such as Qi, Chu, Han, Zhao, Yan, and Wei joined forces to fight against the powerful Qin state.
The Zhao state sent a minister named Wei Jia to meet with the prime minister of Chu, Chunshenjun.
Wei Jia asked Chunshenjun, "Have you already chosen a general to lead the troops into battle?"
Chunshenjun replied, "Yes, I plan to have Linwu Jun take on this responsibility."
Wei Jia thought for a moment and then said, "When I was young, I enjoyed archery. Can I use an archery story as an analogy?"
Chunshenjun nodded in agreement.
So Wei Jia began telling a story about Geng Lei and King Wei.
One day, Geng Lei and King Wei stood on a high platform and looked up to see a group of wild geese flying in the sky.
Geng Lei said to King Wei, "I can shoot down a wild goose in the sky with a bow and arrow, but I don't need to actually release the arrow."
King Wei felt surprised and said, "Can archery skills be so advanced?"
Geng Lei smiled and replied, "Of course they can."
Before long, a group of wild geese flew in from the east.
Geng Lei pulled back the bowstring and then let go.
As a result, a wild goose fell to the ground with a sound.
King Wei asked puzzledly, "Why could it be shot down without releasing the arrow?"
Geng Lei explained, "That wild goose was injured."
King Wei asked again, "How did you know it was injured?"
Geng Lei answered, "Because it was flying slowly and making sad sounds. It was flying slowly because its old injury was still painful, and it was calling out sadly because it couldn't keep up with the other wild geese in the flock. Because its old injury had not yet healed, and its heart was filled with fear, when it heard the sound of the bowstring, it panicked and flew upward, causing the old injury to rupture and fall to the ground."
Finally, Wei Jia said to Chunshenjun, "Just like this injured wild goose, Linwu Jun has been defeated by the Qin army before, and his heart is full of shadows. Therefore, he may not be the most suitable candidate to lead the troops against the Qin army."
This is how the idiom 'a startled bird' came about.
This idiom is used to describe those who have experienced setbacks or fright, and they will feel very uneasy when encountering things.
