Emperor Taizong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, loved reading very much.
He thought that the knowledge in books was like treasure, which could help him govern the country better.
However, there were too many historical classics and literature. How could he finish reading them all?
So, he ordered the great literary figure at that time, Li Fan, to compile an encyclopedia of the essence of books from previous dynasties.
Li Fan and other scholars worked hard for seven years and finally compiled a large book.
Emperor Taizong attached great importance to this book. He named it 'Tai Ping Yu Lan' or simply 'Yu Lan'.
Emperor Taizong read three volumes of 'Tai Ping Yu Lan' every day.
He also set himself a goal: to finish reading the whole book within a year.
Sometimes, due to busy state affairs, he didn't have time to read. But he would definitely make up for it on another day.
The ministers saw how hard Emperor Taizong worked every day, and they were worried that he might be too tired.
They often advised him to rest more, but Emperor Taizong said, 'Reading is beneficial. Reading often always brings benefits. I don't feel tired at all.'
It was because of reading three volumes of 'Tai Ping Yu Lan' every day that Emperor Taizong became knowledgeable and handled state affairs skillfully.
His ministers also followed his example and studied diligently.
Later, the idiom 'Reading is beneficial' spread, referring to the benefit of opening a book and reading.
