Long, long ago in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there was a very talented calligrapher named Wang Xizhi.
One day, the emperor was going to hold a very important sacrificial ceremony in the north suburbs.
To prepare for this ceremony, the workers needed to replace a wooden board with an inscription of the sacrificial text.
The words on this board were written by Wang Xizhi.
When the workers scraped off these characters, they were amazed to find that Wang Xizhi's handwriting had penetrated the wooden board three inches deep!
What a profound penmanship!
This incident was later recorded in a book from the Southern Song Dynasty called 'Pen Array Map', written by Yang Xin.
In this book, Yang Xin used the phrase 'three inches into the wood' to describe Wang Xizhi's penmanship.
At the age of 33, Wang Xizhi wrote a calligraphy work titled 'Lanting Collection Preface'.
Three years later, he wrote another work called 'Huangting Jing'.
Both of these works are considered to be the best small script models in calligraphy art.
Because of his talent and achievements, he was respectfully called 'Saint of Calligraphy' by future generations.
Nowadays, when we say someone's comments are incisive or their description is vivid and lifelike, we use the idiom 'three inches into the wood'.
This is the story we're going to tell today, about Wang Xizhi and his 'three inches into the wood' story.
