During the Jin Dynasty, there was a very knowledgeable man in the south of the Yangtze River named Xia Tong.
He was not only knowledgeable but also very eloquent.
Once, he went to the capital city on business. A high-ranking official named Jia Chong heard about Xia Tong's talent and admired him greatly. He even wanted Xia Tong to help him and strengthen his power.
Jia Chong went to see Xia Tong in person, but Xia Tong did not like being an official. He had already decided not to be one.
He knew that Jia Chong wanted to persuade him to become an official, so he politely declined.
But Jia Chong didn't want to lose this talented person. He thought that if persuasion didn't work, he would use other methods to tempt Xia Tong.
So Jia Chong called for his army and luxurious carriages to be displayed in front of Xia Tong.
He also said to Xia Tong, 'If you agree to me, you can command these armies. How majestic!'
But Xia Tong remained unmoved.
Jia Chong then summoned many beautiful women dressed in fine clothes and jewelry to dance and sing around Xia Tong.
He again said to Xia Tong, 'As long as you are willing to become an official, these beauties will all be yours.'
But Xia Tong still sat there, pretending not to see or hear anything.
In the end, Jia Chong had no choice but to give up. He angrily said, 'Xia Tong is really a wooden man with a stone heart!',
Later, Xia Tong returned to Kuaiji, and no one ever heard from him again.
Jia Chong described Xia Tong as a 'wooden man with a stone heart', and this saying has been passed down.
It is used to describe those who are determined and unswayed by benefits or threats.
