On a sunny afternoon, a hungry fox was strolling through the forest.
Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to a bunch of shiny, tempting grapes hanging from a tall grapevine.
The grapes looked big and sweet from where he stood.
The fox's mouth watered as he thought, "How wonderful it would be if I could eat those grapes!"
So, he jumped up, trying to reach for the grapes.
But no matter how high he jumped, he couldn't quite get them.
He tried again and again, but failed every time.
Looking at the bunches of grapes, the fox felt very frustrated.
He sat on the ground, looking disappointedly at the grapevine.
After a while, he stood up and said to himself,
"Well, I guess these grapes are not ripe yet. They must be sour."
Then, the fox shook his head and walked away.
As he walked, he told himself, "I don't want to eat those sour grapes anyway."
In fact, the fox knew deep down that he was just making an excuse because he couldn't reach the grapes.
This story teaches us: sometimes, when we can't do something, we might make an excuse to comfort ourselves.
Just like this fox, he knew he couldn't reach the grapes, so he told himself they were sour, so he wouldn't feel so bad.
But we should remember, when facing difficulties, we should bravely try instead of giving up easily.
